OPENLY ANNOUNCES 1CATE SUPPORT FOR NISO OpenURL STANDARD

Openly is First to Put New Standard to Work in Libraries

Bloomfield, New Jersey - May 9, 2003 - Openly Informatics, Inc. (http://nj.oclc.org/) today announced the implementation of a new NISO linking standard in their 1Cate Link-Server Software.

The OpenURL Standard, version 1.0 was released as a Draft Standard for Trial Use on April 15, 2003 and the Trial implementation period commenced on May 1. This new draft standard is the culmination of two years of committee work, and is designed to provide an extensible framework for linking in libraries. Software based on OpenURL will enable users to enjoy seamless access to all of a library's information resources. The OpenURL 1.0 Standard also includes new support for patents, dissertations, and international text.

1Cate (which stands for "1-Click Access To Everything") is Openly's suite of software and services designed for OpenURL resolution and e-journal linking. On May 1st, Openly's Hosted 1Cate system, which is serving end users in libraries on three continents, became OpenURL 1.0 compliant, making it the first system to put the new Standard to work in real libraries.

"The new OpenURL standard puts libraries back into the digital library, empowering librarians to build seamless information environments from diverse vendors. We expect OpenURL to be a powerful engine of progress for the entire information industry and we are very excited to be participating in the trial-use process. We thank NISO for supporting development of this standard." said Openly's President, Eric Hellman.

According to Eric Van de Velde, Director of Library Information Technology at Caltech, and Chairman of the NISO OpenURL Standardization Committee, "With the release of OpenURL Version 1.0 as a Draft Standard for Trial Use, implementors of OpenURL Resolvers and providers of OpenURL-enabled information are able to conduct collaborative experiments on the next generation of context-sensitive links. I am happy to see implementations that begin to realize the ambitious goals of the standardization committee."
